For Sara Bennett, Red Plaid memories
are sweet. She grew up watching her
m other scoop love onto baking sheets in
the form of cookies. “I want to pass this
on to Paige,” Sara says, bundling her
i3-m onth-old daughter in her arms.
The stay-at-home Bay City, Michigan,
mom is working on that, with a little help
from her cookbook. “ My cookbook was
a high school graduation present that
started me off on the right foot— it’s like
having a teacher in the kitchen with you,”
Sara says. “We’re using it more and more
to venture out— beyond the Italian
classics I grew up on.”
That venturing is a welcome respite for
Sara, who jokes that she’s quite possibly
the only woman o f Sicilian descent who
hates red sauce. “ I know that’s absurd,
but I really detest it,” she says with a laugh.
She and husband Jake, who pitches in
on dinner detail on weekends, also like to
go beyond the basic chicken and chops
they som etim es get stuck on and add
variety to family meals.
“My cookbook is like my culinary
security blanket,” Sara says. ‘Thanks to
the bread and cookie recipes— the
banana bread in particular— I’m already
known as an excellent baker.”
And Paige? She’s well on her way after
“helping” whip up a treat for her first
birthday. “Chocolate cake,” Sara says,
pointing to a page now splattered with
batter. And memories.
